Learning to Appreciate Imperfection

Posted in Artistic Endeavors on June 28, 2010 by Patti

I do not draw much. I love to take pictures and use my own images in my work, but I do not particularly like the way I draw. I always feel like my pictures come out looking primitive & unskilled.

Having said that, I spent a couple of days with a sketchbook & a graphite pencil trying my hand at a little drawing. I have tried to look at my recent work with a less critical eye, and I admit there are one or two attempts that I sort of like… at least I don’t hate them as much as I usually do. I am going to post one here.

Take that, inner critic!

It’s not about the Destination, it’s about the Journey

It has been several days since I was last in my studio to do any work. Mostly because I have been occupied with projects around the house and with helping my hubby get some things in order in my old studio so that he can turn it into a workshop. He is very excited! Also because the heat here is oppressive and has sucked every last ounce of motivation from me.

I have been thinking about the new studio in a very linear fashion… I must unpack and organize before I can get down to the business of making art again. Given recent developments, I have decided that this is not the way to approach things any longer. For one thing, my muse is starting to tickle me again now that some of the grief of the past year is lifting a little. For another, I spent some time last night with a good art buddy of mine, and she has inspired me to create.

I spent the morning with my sketchbook and a graphite pencil trying to become a little more comfortable with my drawing abilities… I am not there yet by any means and will require much practice, but I find I am enjoying the process quite a bit. There are even one or two attempts to draw girlies that I do not hate. Yay me!

And I don’t feel guilty about not unpacking today… well, not too guilty anyway.

Art & the iPhone

I have discovered the Hipstamatic app on my iphone. I had seen other artists refer to it in posts & blogs, but it took me awhile to get around to downloading it and playing a little. It is my new favorite toy… and a perfect distraction from all of my unpacking and sorting and organizing. I have been playing with it for a little while now, and it is going to be a seriously interesting tool.

I’ve even used it t take pictures of some of my photography with some intriguing results.

Tiny Islands of Calm in a Sea of Chaos

Posted in Artistic Endeavors, Misc. on June 21, 2010 by Patti

Just a short post this morning to report that I am plodding along & have a few signs of organization starting to emerge from the chaos…

Slow Going

Several days of unpacking and I feel like I’m just rearranging piles & boxes. *sigh*

Mostly, this is because I am clearing out the remainder of my parents’ things in addition to organizing my own. Jumping back and forth between the tasks is a bit daunting, and I find it’s easy to lose momentum. It will all get done eventually.

I do have one pretty picture, though. I decided to create a little sense of completion around a corner shelf…

Maybe someday it will all look this neat… fingers crossed.

It’s Official

I finally took the last load of boxes up to the new studio today. There are just a couple of decorative items I need to take down from the wall, but I think I can now declare my studio to be officially moved.

Did I mention that I have accumulated way too much junque over the years in the name of art?

Let the organization begin!

I spent the afternoon up at my new studio. I was moving almost the last of the junque from my old tiny studio here at home. One or two more boxes to pack and the decorations to take off the walls, and then I won’t have to schlep back and forth any more… not to mention that my hubby will have a workshop space. Yay!

The chaos, of course, is at the other end.
